The Den – Finalists for the Children & Young People Now Awards 2020
My name is Kerrie Fawcett and I am the manager at The Den in Blackpool. Firstly, I want to say I huge thank you to all the judges at Children & Young People Now to be finalists for this prestigious award. We are hugely honoured. The Den are very proud to have provided specialist support to thousands of children and young people experiencing domestic abuse across Blackpool and the Fylde coast for over 11 years.
Domestic abuse has amplified massively during the global pandemic. This has been covered across a number of media platforms. Domestic Abuse has and is a major issue across the country but even more so in our town. What the research tells us is this has significantly worsened during the pandemic.
The Den’s work has not stopped during the pandemic and the volume of children coming through our doors has doubled. The team have been extremely dedicated and provided specialist one to one support to each family that they have had weekly contact with. Although for a short period face-to-face work had to stop due to government guidelines as soon as this changed our staff team got back out there seeing children each day in person.
The Children’s IDVAs are a real inspiration and it is an honour to manage such wonderful individuals. Their passion and determination to work alongside some of the most vulnerable families in our seaside town. The creativity they have shown during this pandemic to deliver support session has been a huge challenge but they have exceeded all expectations. .
We are very keen for all children to return to school on the 8th of March and we are ready and prepared for the many children who will have not been heard or had opportunity to discuss their worries during the last few months. The message is clear – we are still open and we are still providing these vital support services to families across the Fylde Coast.
